Decline

The last regular steam passenger service was hauled in August, 1964. The last service to use a Walker Rail Car was mid 1978(22RM), when this was replaced with a DERM (Diesel Electric Rail Motor) from 1962 until 1979 when DERM 58 took over until the end of the service on 9/12/80. The freight service finished a week before the rail motor ceasing.

In the final times the DERM was only permitted a maximum speed of 30km/hr and no loco hauled passenger trains were permitted and only “Y” Class diesels could run the freight services after 5/8/80 (after T401 derailed).

After 9/12/80 no services operated beyond Coldstream and the line was officially closed to all traffic 10/3/83.
